Protection from discrimination is a fundamental principle of all democratic societies. Any different, negative, or adverse treatment to people on grounds of their racial or ethnic origin, religion or beliefs, disability, age, or sexual orientation shall be prohibited. To combat direct and indirect discrimination, the EU has adopted a legislative framework to ensure that all people have the right to receive the same treatment and are not discriminated against. CERV builds on the progress achieved in the EU, funding actions to promote equality, tackle discrimination and improve responses to racism, antisemitism, and xenophobia. The EU anti-racism action plan for 2020-2025, the LGBTIQ Equality Strategy 2020-2025, the EU Roma strategic framework on equality, inclusion and participation, the EU Strategy on combating antisemitism and fostering Jewish Life 2021-2030 are among the key policy guiding documents.

On of the funded actions is the project Sporting Cities Opposing Racism in Europe (SCORE). SCORE is a network of cities that conceive grassroots sport as a tool to promote the social inclusion of people of migrant origin, asylum seekers and refugees, as well as those belonging to ethnic minorities.

Why is this initiative  so relevant? SCORE has managed to create a broad and inclusive alliance of cities for the prevention of racism, xenophobia and related intolerance in sport involving foundations and federations, coaching schools, supporters and fan clubs, media and related civil society organisations present.

Part of the efforts focuses on training grassroots sport professionals, as well as community and sports intervention professionals in local entities in the field of prevention and fight against racism, xenophobia, and related forms of intolerance in sport.

On 21 March 2023, on the international Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, SCORE launched an interactive map that identifies all the sport initiatives aiming to fight racism across Europe and beyond.
