Teachers' and school heads' salaries and allowances in Europe – 2022/2023

Teacher salaries and career prospects are critical to attracting and retaining talent in education. But how do these prospects evolve as teachers gain experience? How has inflation impacted their earnings, and have they gained or lost purchasing power in recent years?

School heads play a vital role in improving the quality of education and tackling challenges such as early school leaving. This raises important questions: What are the minimum salaries for school leaders across Europe? Does the size of a school affect their remuneration?

The Eurydice interactive tool provides in-depth comparative data on the statutory and actual salaries of teachers and school heads across 37 countries, members of the Eurydice Network, covering pre-primary to upper secondary education. The tool allows for detailed analysis of salaries, and allowances at different education levels and career stages.

The data was collected collaboratively by the Eurydice and OECD/NESLI networks, providing valuable insights into the remuneration of teachers and school heads across European education systems.
