Education on informatics is essential to equip children and young people with the necessary skills to take an active part in our technology-driven and increasingly digital societies in a responsible and safe manner. The COVID-19 crisis has underlined the need for policy actions in this area and has certainly been a turning point for digital education. Informatics is still a relatively new discipline in school education, and the name and focus of the related school subjects vary across European countries.
This report contributes to building a shared understanding of informatics education, providing a comparative analysis of curricular approaches and learning outcomes in primary and secondary schools across Europe. It also looks into teachers' qualifications and training opportunities. The report finds, for instance, that more than two thirds of the education systems are developing or implementing reforms to update the informatics school curricula, often introducing a new separate subject in one or more education levels.
