Child Check 2024

Child Check 2024 works to better protect the rights and well-being of children who have a parent in prison—one of the most invisible and vulnerable groups in Europe.

Throughout 2024, the project helped children stay connected to their parents, reduce stigma, and be treated with dignity by justice, education, and social systems. A key impact was the Game with Mum & Dad campaign, which allowed thousands of children across Europe to spend positive, meaningful time with their imprisoned parents through child-friendly activities in prisons. These moments strengthened family bonds, reduced trauma, and helped change how prison staff and the public perceive children affected by imprisonment.

By training prison staff, police officers, judges, teachers, and social workers, the project improved everyday practices so that children’s needs and best interests are better considered. Importantly, children themselves were consulted and shared their experiences, directly influencing recommendations for policy and practice. Overall, Child Check 2024 contributed to more humane, inclusive, and child-friendly justice systems across Europe.
